Clearing of Alien Trees:
KRGT is fortunate enough to have many of sources of water but some of our springs and rivers are under threat due to the encroachment of Bluegum and Wattle trees in the area. These Alien species consume vast amounts of water with the result that many of the natural Kloofs are being sucked dry, which directly affects the natural balance of nature. Increased run-off from the mountains also means valuable top soil is washed away and natural erosion occurs much quicker. KRGT is at the forefront of Alien Clearing in the area – not only are water sources re-established for a healthy environment but industrial charcoal, a product of the incineration of these trees is an important material in the production of for instance very high grade silicon. The Alien clearing project has a direct impact on the local community by creating long-term employment and a source of income for the workers.
As well as developing and upgrading our accommodation and facilities, we are currently erecting 2,4m perimeter game fence. We endeavour to use as much local material as possible for this purpose and have just acquired a tanalith wood treatment plant to effectively treat our own poles and droppers. The fencing is scheduled for completion during 2011.
Keurbooms River Game Trails plays an active role in conservation. Just this week a ‘PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT’ pact was established between four landowners providing a biodiversity corridor between SANParks (Garden Route National Park) in the North and SANParks (Diepwalle) in the South. KRGT featured in Femina magazine…
Starting in the Western Cape, a RED-BILLED OXPECKER was seen yesterday at Keurbooms River Game Trails, a private game farm on the Garden Route. The bird was seen associating with a Blue Wildebeest at co-ordinates 33.50S 23.16E. According to the local rangers, they have being seeing Oxpeckers in the area since February already and suggestions are that there are probably several individuals in the area as well.
